Clubcard, Nectar, BPme: which loyalty scheme saves most?
Fuel loyalty schemes are deliberately hard to compare - some give points, some give price locks, some give vouchers you spend elsewhere. We translated the main ones into a single thing that matters: how much they knock off a typical tank.
Points-based: Tesco and Nectar
Tesco Clubcard and Nectar (at Esso and Sainsbury's) reward you with points on your spend that convert into money off groceries or partner deals. The per-litre value is modest but reliable, and it stacks on top of already-cheap supermarket pricing - which is what makes it add up.
Price locks and guarantees
Some schemes guarantee you the lowest local price or lock a price for a period. These are most valuable when prices are rising, because you are insulated from the increase, and least valuable when prices are falling. Read the radius and the conditions carefully.
Visit-based: Shell Go+ and BPme
Shell Go+ rewards regular visits with periodic money off, while BPme earns points on every litre. If you are loyal to one branded network and pass it often, these can be worthwhile - but only if that network is competitive on base price to begin with.
The verdict
There is no single winner, because the best scheme is the one attached to the forecourts you actually pass. The reliable strategy is to start from the cheapest base price near you, then let loyalty break ties. That is exactly how Fuel Checker ranks sites once your cards are added - by the real, after-rewards price.
