Why fuel is cheaper in the Midlands right now

If your tank is cheaper to fill in Leicester than in Lewisham, you are not imagining it. The Midlands has quietly become one of the best-value places to buy fuel in the country, and the reason comes down to one thing more than any other: competition.

It starts with density

The single biggest driver of local fuel prices is how many forecourts are fighting for the same drivers. The Midlands is dense with large supermarket sites - Asda, Tesco, Morrisons and Sainsbury's all run high-volume forecourts within a few miles of one another across cities like Birmingham, Coventry, Nottingham and Leicester. When four big retailers can all see each other's totem prices, none of them wants to be the most expensive, and the price drifts down.

Supermarkets set the floor

Supermarket forecourts typically run a few pence a litre under nearby branded sites, because fuel is a footfall play: they would rather sell you cheap petrol and a full trolley than make a margin at the pump. Where supermarkets cluster, that discount becomes the local benchmark and even branded stations have to move closer to it to stay competitive.

The motorway effect, in reverse

Rural areas and motorway services sit at the other end of the scale. A single station serving a quiet A-road has no one to undercut and a longer, costlier delivery run, so its prices stay high. The Midlands benefits from the opposite: short delivery distances from major terminals and a lot of nearby rivals.

How to use this

Regional averages are a useful headline, but the savings are always at the forecourt level. Open the Fuel Map, drop your postcode, and sort by price - the cheapest site within a sensible detour is often several pence under the one you usually use. Layer your loyalty cards on top and the real, after-rewards price can fall further still.
